Happy Haunted Trail 5K (And We Can’t Forget the Expo!)

18 Oct

After spending Thursday night Trick-or-Treating my way through the Magic Kingdom I decided to take it easy on Friday…

Yeah, right! I was in Walt Disney World – there’s no “taking it easy” in WDW!!! I knew I would have to hit the expo as soon as possible (mainly to get it out of the way so I could park around!) so got up a little later than planned, made my instant oatmeal and coffee in the room and set out to wait for the bus.

But then I decided to go to one of the parks and THEN catch a bus. EPCOT was calling my name!! And it would be easy to monorail over to the Poly and catch a bus to the expo! I jumped on a couple of rides (Spaceship Earth anyone?!) and then figured it was a good enough time to head over to the expo.

After my experience at the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend expo I was braced for just about anything!! To my delight and surprise things were “normal” for an expo. But still, I wanted to get my wine glass (if they had them. They didn’t) and medallions for my nephews’ Vinylmation dolls. And maybe pins for the boys too.

I grabbed my goodies and headed to the, relatively, short line and chatted with the people around me – as one tends to do in line at runDisney expos!

After picking up my bibs and shirts for the runs the next day it was back to my room to drop off my loot – then back out to EPCOT for some International Food and Wine action!

After a bit more wandering it was time for dinner and getting ready for an early day on Saturday! Ps – the muffaletta at Port Orleans is a pretty good representation – just olive-y enough!!

Got my clothes together and took a shower and hit the hay early early. Saturday would be an early start but not as early as usual for Disney events! Since this was a trail run, it wouldn’t start until after sunrise!!

My first thought when I woke up was “I don’t want to do this again tomorrow” followed immediately by “Oh yeah, I don’t have to. The second race is tonight!” I oatmealed again, got dressed and headed for the bus – thank you Fireside Girl costume for making my life easy! I had an awful lot of people calling me a Girl Scout…

The Happy Haunted Trail 5K takes place on the grounds of ESPN Wide World of Sports – starting out on the big fields.

Corrals were set up – very official looking this time! I didn’t notice people checking bibs but I have heard that they were there! Usually the waiting is the tough part but there was so much to look at, so many great costumes, that the time really went by fast. And then, there are the pictures!

008

There was a guest appearance by the Headless Horseman – with warnings to all to stay on the paths and not get off course. Or. Else.

The weather was uncomfortable but it definitely was warm. And the sun wasn’t up yet!

012

The course is mostly trail/grass running with a half loop around the track – running on the track brought back memories of the LAST time I was on that track at about mile 18 of the Marathon in January!

021

Running on the cushion-y track makes me feel like a REAL runner!!

There were characters out on the course – I just missed seeing Captain Hook, but got a shot with one of his men…

017

As the miles went past, things definitely heated up and I was happy to get to the finish and some cool water! And the cute medal!

003

Unless you’re a regular trail runner you probably had some difficulty with the trail portions of the course. All in all though, it was a super nice morning!!

And, the plan for post-race was definitely to take things easy — I had another 10 miles to go that night!!

Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend – Typhoon Lagoon and Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party

17 Oct

Unfortunately – my camera has been acting up so, sadly, there aren’t a whole lot of pictures – until I get my Photopass CD!

It was once again time to hop on a plane and get to the Happiest Place on Earth for some more Magical Miles!

I was less prepared this time, yes, that IS possible!! – so spent the night before my flight packing and making sure I had enough running clothes! Doing the Happy Haunted Trail 5K on Saturday morning and then the Tower of Terror 10-Miler on Saturday night! PLUS, I had bought a ticket to attend Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party (spoiler – you want to go to this!). So far it was looking like there was not going to be a lot of sleeping on this trip!

Everything went smoothly on the travel front – I got to Orlando around 10:30 in the AM and knew what my first post resort check-in stop would be! I’ve started packing my bathing suit and towel in my carry on bag so that I can head there as soon as possible…Head where?

Typhoon Lagoon! I have “discovered” the Disney Water Parks this year, thanks to my Premier Pass (lots more on that later!). And, truth be told, I LOVE water parks! And, as with everything they do, Disney rocks the water park! There is something for everyone – all ages can have a great time.

001

I usually warm up by hitting the Disney version of a Lazy River – in this case it’s called Castaway Creek – a 2,000 foot tour around the entire park! I followed this up by a few trips down various water slides.

The only downside here to being a “single rider” is that there are some attractions that are limited to 2 or more riders. So next time I’m going to find a partner!

It was a gorgeous warm day and after a few hours I decided it was time to head back to the Port Orleans – French Quarter and have a look around before getting dressed for the Halloween Party!

003

This was my first time staying at POFQ and it was nice. With one bus stop, transportation was pretty easy and quick. Especially to the Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. For some trips we would make additional stops at the Port Orleans Riverside resort but we were generally the first stop on the way home which is always nice late at night!!

The Halloween Party is really an excuse for children of all ages to get dressed up in costumes and go trick-or-treating! And man, do some people go all out!! I saw entire families dressed up – babies to grandparents!! I ended up dressing as “Generic Woodland Fairy” when I couldn’t get my Tinkerbell wings to stay upright!

And, the trick or treating is OUTRAGEOUS!! I ended up leaving at least 2 pounds of candy in my hotel room when I left and I’m sure I ate at least that much in the 4 days it sat there staring at me!!

Rides were open, characters were out in full costume – I mean, the characters had on their costumes! – and there’s even a special parade – the Boo! To You parade – with special Halloween fireworks. The parade features the Headless Horseman and lots of characters you don’t see in your every day Disney Parade! The gravediggers from the Haunted Mansion as well as the dinner guests and dancers from the Mansion!

It had been a seriously long day – with a 6 am flight you know I was up by 2:30 – so by the time the party was winding down this was one tired fairy! And I had a big day of parks ahead of me, as well as the race expo, on Friday.

What is your favorite Halloween treat?
