You Should Try Other Distances

The Greater Hartford Quarter Marathon – April 1

No foolin’! This is a quarter marathon route — about 6.55 miles – – a double loop around the West Hartford Reservoir. It’s a gorgeous course that I’ve run as a 5K and for this event.

Put on by the same folks who bring us one of my absolute favorite half marathons – Sonic Endurance. All of their races have a real family feel and this one is no exception.

The weather for April 1 can be unpredictable in New England and we were on weather watch for this one for sure! Friday afternoon packet pickup was held in Glastonbury so I headed over after work. Grabbed my bib and tshirt and came home to get ready.

Event Shirt back and medal – my ribbon fell off but it’s still pretty!!

Rain was in the forecast. Or snow. But there was definitely going to be precipitation. Because of this the post race festivities were being cancelled so the awesome volunteers wouldn’t have to hang around in the rain.

It looked like I was going to have to pull out my Toasty Tights again, but forecasts said it would be less cold than my St. Patricks Day races had been so I went with some Go The Distance tights, my Toasty Girl Vest (Skirt Sports saves the day again!!), and a plastic rain poncho! When I left the house, it was rainy/drizzly

When I woke up on April Fool’s Day — the weather was….still pretty unpredictable.

On the drive up to the race, I went through some rain. And some sleet. And, was that a little bit of snow? When I got to the West Hartford Reservoir I found a good parking spot and settled in. And watched the icy rain/snow slide down the windshield.

Start time approached so I pulled on my plastic raincoat and headed to the start line – it was a bit drizzly and quite windy and chilly! Someone asked if I planned to wear the plastic the whole time and really I had no idea!

Spoiler: I did keep the poncho on the whole time – which was good since the weather changed every couple of miles!

There was a small section of mud running which I do NOT like – I’m clumsy enough as it is and feared falling in the cold mud so walked that bit both times I went through! Otherwise I managed to keep to my intervals pretty good and while I didn’t set any records I had a good time!

Post Race — one day I will not make dumb faces in selfies!!

Post race I grabbed a cupcake and headed home to shower and warm up!

My next race was coming up the next week – my first time running the Hershey 10K!

My First Skirt!

6 Apr

The first time I ran a marathon I wore, I kid you not, cotton “running” tights covered by a pair of sweatpants and a short sleeved *cotton* tshirt under an old college sweatshirt. And probably cotton socks. You see, when we headed out to the starting area, it was chilly and it was raining. In LA. In March. My plan was to find my parents on the course (they were flying in that morning) and give them my outer clothes.

I never saw them. And I LOVED my sweatshirt so that wasn’t going anywhere. I ended up with bigger blisters on my feet than I’d ever seen (wet shoes/socks + cotton = ICK!) and, as many runners know, I learned in the shower that I had some pretty serious chafing under each of my arms. So severe that for almost 2 months I had scabs and the scars lasted another couple of years!

Why am I telling you this? Well…

After this first disaster I wasn’t finished with this marathon thing. Obviously. And, while I wasn’t ready to jump into running in a running bra and shorts I needed something different. I experimented for a few years and then one day, probably at a race expo, I saw a table for Skirt Sports!

WHAT? Skirts for running? That’s just crazy talk.

It had just so happened that I had recently been diagnosed with diabetes and the subsequent life-style changes had caused about a 20 pound weight loss. So I was ready for my legs to be out in the open!

I did suffer from a condition we like to call “Chub Rub” cause I guess it sounds cute – so I bought the original Gym Girl TRIKS (skirt spelled backwards – clever huh?!) but I also picked up a Marathon Girl or two.

Since then I’ve pretty much always run in skirts. I remember times when me showing up in my pink leopard spotted Marathon Girl was VERY unusual – and I was stopped many times to be asked about my skirts!

These might be my only remaining originals…no shorties underneath just panties

One of my most favorite marathon pictures ever is me at the NYC Marathon in my bright blue skirt

This picture was taken before everyone ran with phones that took pictures. Or, just phones ๐Ÿ™‚

That is, until Marine Corps Marathon last year when I was out on the course in my Tantrum Lioness!!

Not a great race, but I looked pretty good, huh?!

Over the years, Nicole DeBoom has come up with a few more styles, and added in tops and capris and now, even dresses! To be honest though, the dresses were an original and are coming back in new styles this spring!!

I don’t still have all of my originals on account of that 20 pound weight loss didn’t stick around! But I definitely keep adding to my collection – super helpful now that I’m an ambassador for the company that got me to show my legs out on a run!!
