Paris Marathon – Day 1

8 Apr

OMG!!! Is that here already???!!!

But first, a quick look at the first week of April. I will not-too-happily admit that I am still having a tough time getting in the groove but…. And, that whole thing where I was going to cut back on my road-ragey-ness for Lent? Well…yeah. I was a little better but there was still always that ogre sitting in the car! On the “bright” side, I managed to stay away from the Cadbury mini-eggs. For the most part. I ate about 6 of them last night. And this morning.

mini eggs

Get in mah belly delicious milk chocolate!!!

I’ve spent a lot of the last couple of weeks talking myself up to get through the Paris Marathon.

What? Is that here already? Well, yes it is! And I have resigned myself to being very near the back of the pack on this one! Not to say I’m not gonna leave everything out there on the Champs Elysees. This is a flat-ish course. Supposedly. There isn’t a lot out there that I’ve been able to find other than this: from 5 years ago:

Paris Profile 1

Not too bad…

General consensus is that the last 5K is where the biggest hill is found. It’s also where the wine and cheese is found…Pick your poison 😉

And it’s Europe ya’ll. These people are serious about their running… We ‘Murricans at the back of the pack are a little less so. I’m in the last corral – but here, the timing for the last corral is “anything over 4:30” So, thinking there could be a pretty serious PR in my future.

Anyhoo…Day 1. Since I’m flying on miles, and to get the ‘best’ use of my miles I prefer to use First Class to fly internationally, the best option was to fly out of Washington DC. Which isn’t really a problem for me. I came down the night before just because I didn’t want the stress of a travel day drive.

This means that tomorrow I can take my time getting ready, and consolidating my carry-on stuff. And get in a short run…what?!

The worst part of the day, of course, was saying goodbye to this face:

Phred1

I hate leaving him but it helps that I’m leaving him with someone who treats him like family. And he’s got three other dogs in the house to lord it over.

So on the docket for tomorrow is breakfast, a run (hoping to put an hour or so in on the treadmill) maybe lunch then heading to the airport where I will relax in the lounge until it’s time to get on my plane!!

I haven’t been to Paris in about 15 years and I’m going with my oldest, dearest friend in the world so this is going to be SO MUCH FUN!!

Even that 26.2 mile thing. Or should I say 42.195K thing

I hope you’ll follow along and send all of your support!!

And Here We Go!!!

Almost…

And, the worst part of any runDisney trip, I’ve dropped the Phred off at his sitter’s. Good thing he loves it there or it would be even more painful. For me.

All there is to do now is get ready for bed and try to sleep…but maybe I’ll have a glass of wine first!!

If you’re travelling down to Orlando this week, have a safe and uneventful trip- if you’re staying home, my times will be posted on Facebook, right out in the open! Yikes!!

Disney Bound!!

2 Oct

Last year when I ran #alltheraces that runDisney could throw at me, I spent a LOT of time in both Florida and California! So, it’s a little surprising to me that when I head down to Orlando this morning it will be only my second trip all year! And, for the first time EVER – Phred gets to come with me since we’re staying with friends and not a Disney Resort. (seriously Disney, join the pet-friendly generation!)

Note for those who like to bring their 4-legged kids along on planes — If you book a Southwest flight but you end up flight sharing with AirTran, you cannot make advance reservations for your pet! Which can cause much stress no matter how many times you call both AirTran and Southwest…I’m not highly trusting of the “just show up at the airport with your pet” method of planning!!

One day I will learn to plan and pack ahead, where “ahead” is not as I should be going to bed the night before travelling. Or the morning I leaave! Postponing packing leads to overpacking that’s for sure. And forgetting things. And stressing about that little bag of Disney gift cards that you KNOW is in the office but the office hasn’t been cleared up in a while and vowing that I WILL find it before I go down for Wine and Dine!!!

On this trip, I’m not participating in any races (I am volunteering instead!), though should get in at least 2 runs since I have not been so good on the training front this week… so no costumes being packed – just Ears!! Plus some of Phred’s things! A

nd I’m using my brand new suitcase!! It’s tiny on the outside but holding a lot of stuff now!!

023

I might even bring that neck pillow I won also! Give it a test run 😉

But first I’ll log in at work and make sure I’ve sent out everything I need to send out, and set up my “Out of Office” email message!!

There was a half marathon this week.  It was not pretty. I mean, the course was gorgeous, my results, not so much.

So let’s get to the training wrap-up:

The Higdon plan was:
Tuesday – 3 miles
Wednesday – 5 miles
Thursday – 3 miles
Saturday – 4 miles
Sunday – 14 miles

What Anne managed to do is:
Tuesday – 3.5 miles ( had to circle my cul de sac a few times to even things up!)
Wednesday – 5.08 miles – I decided to take the time in the middle of the day to get it in since I also had to get the lawn mowed and my hair cut Wednesday night!
Thursday – walked about 2.5. Not really counting this as “done” since…well, it wasn’t 3 and I walked 🙂 But I got out there!! In the rain.
Saturday – Hogsback Half Marathon. Map My Run says I did 15.7 miles but…it was probably closer  to 13.1 😉
Sunday – decided to baby my foot (see yesterday’s recap) and did not do my 4 miles. I’m not beating myself up over that. Too much. 🙂

Now, on to this coming week! It’s a biggie since I’m heading down to Orlando to cheer on my friends in runDisney Tower of Terror 10 Miler!  That’s right, a trip to Disney and I’m *NOT* running!! Well…I’ll run…but no bling for me!! 😉

The Higdon plan for the week is:
Tuesday – 3 miles
Wednesday – 6 miles (oh no! we’re stepping things up!!)
Thursday – 3 miles
Saturday – 8 miles

The mileage is just going to keep going up until December or so…

just run

This week I will also stop by Middletown Bikram to sign up for a year or two – and start back up when I’m back in town!!  Can’t wait!!

Is there a workout that you really look forward to? Bikram is that workout for me!!

A Family Weekend Away

12 Aug

056

So maybe they aren’t family, but they’re darn close!!

Most summers, my friend Kathy and I (along with Earnest Phred) take a trip to visit friends in Pennsylvania. Usually it’s a quick QUICK trip – Friday afternoon to Monday morning – but this year we extended by a day!

Of course the drive was super super exciting* and it took us a bit longer than expected to get there (Thank you NY State Road Works team). NB: I will never in all my life EVER understand how traffic can come to a full and complete stop on a highway. For half hours at a time!! But, I digress!

005

*not actually exciting at all!

When we got to Harrisburg, our friends were at a neighborhood block party so we joined them at their neighbor’s house for burgers and dogs. Okay, technically just a burger (half a bun, thankyouverymuch!). Then we headed back to Jenn and Mark’s house to unwind on their porch.

We had no real plans for Saturday so after moseying around the house for a bit, we went out to a local farm and picked blueberries. Ya’ll! I haven’t ever seen such big berries before!! And so many of them!

012

013

015

And that would be my fabulously blueberry stained hand there…

And then we came home and baked a gluten-free pie!

030

And by “we” I mean Jennifer…

Which was quite tasty!

It was a lazy stay in night and we ordered up some pizza.

Got up Sunday morning and when Jennifer asked about my training run scheduled for the weekend I was truthful and said 3 miles – so we laced up and headed out. It was really a nice run, and not too hot and not terribly humid (though sweat *did* happen!) Got in a bit over 3 and had a decent pace – I think Jenn’s long legs helped with that!

That evening, as always seems to happen, it started to rain while we were getting ready to head to dinner and then Hershey Park (to ride the rides you don’t want to take a 3 year-old on!). But we got to see this on the way to the restaurant so – bright side!

032

Dinner was great! And naturally by the time we were ready to head to the park the weather cleared and we were able to get on a few coasters before the rain started again. While it was raining, Jennifer kicked some butts in air hockey.

Headed home because Monday was going to be our full park day!! All the roller coaster-y fun is recapped here! We ended the day with the family picture above, but then I had to get a picture with my other main man — Sorry Goofy

059

After a stop at Chocolate World to see the singing cows

066

it was definitely time for home and getting ready for the drive home on Tuesday! And I can’t wait to get back to Hershey Park in October!!

Tuesday we decided to take a different route home, hoping to avoid all of the road “work” that was going on when we drove over Friday. This led us to a little place called Kitchen Kettle Village and did some browsing and tasting. Quite a bit of tasting actually!! And, of course a little picture taking 🙂

071

Phred seems a little unsure of that big cookie!

080

OMG!!! He was there in person!!! (I’m holding Phred mainly so he doesn’t try to pee on the big cookie…cause…he might…)

Then it was straight on to home, which was a much MUCH nicer trip than on the way over!

Heading back in October for the Hershey Half Marathon and more fun with friends – and I can’t WAIT!!
