Back for Another Year!

10 Feb

AmbassadorStamp

I am, of course, late with this but…I am THRILLED to let you know that I was chosen again to be part of the Skirt Sports Ambassador Team as an Ambassador Captain for the third year!!

IMG_1084

This was taken after last year’s 13er – in the fountain at the CU UMC – one of my college goals was to “jump in the fountain” after finals. I never made it them, but look at me now!!!!

I’m really looking forward to it – this is such an awesome group of women from all walks of life, involved in all kinds of different healthy stuff!  Nicole DeBoom started a company to make women athletes feel amazing no matter what level of fitness they are at and no matter what size they are. It’s a brand for Every Woman. For Real Women. The models on the site? Most of them are Ambassadors or work for the company – they aren’t actually professional models!

Ambassadors at last year’s retreat outside of Boulder

The aim of the company is to help every woman realize her potential. Through the Running Start program women are given the chance to overcome obstacles and start on the road to fitness  – training culminates in their running the 5k at the Skirt Sports 13er in June in Boulder Colorado

But it isn’t just that. Whether you’re an elite athlete or a back-of-the-packer (my peeps!) you can find your tribe over at Skirt Sports. And I’m telling ya’ll…the love is real! I’ve made some great friends and even got to meet one of my blogging idols last year (I’m looking it you Jenn from Scootadoot!)

Founder Nicole DeBoom has a podcast that is fantastic – Women Run the World. Look for it where you find your podcasts 🙂 She’s always talking with someone interesting and you’ll definitely learn something!

So, apart for getting to rep an amazing company I love, what’s in it for me? Well, I do get a pretty good discount on the clothes and with each new release of styles and patterns I get a gift certificate to spend. And I get to share with you, my friends, a 20% discount on nearly Every. Thing on the site (or in the store!) – use code 1SSCAPT20. This won’t work on clearance items, and it will expire on March 31 or sooner if we get personal codes before then! But, you will always get a new code!!

And, as an affiliate, if you click a Skirt Sports link in my blog, I get a few pennies from your purchase. If you don’t buy, I don’t get the pennies.

But, really. If you want to find some comfy clothes, either for running or hiking or some crazy Ultra running or triathlon thing, you should have a look! Give it a try…you’e got nothing to lose and an awesome tribe to gain!!

My First Skirt!

6 Apr

The first time I ran a marathon I wore, I kid you not, cotton “running” tights covered by a pair of sweatpants and a short sleeved *cotton* tshirt under an old college sweatshirt. And probably cotton socks. You see, when we headed out to the starting area, it was chilly and it was raining. In LA. In March. My plan was to find my parents on the course (they were flying in that morning) and give them my outer clothes.

I never saw them. And I LOVED my sweatshirt so that wasn’t going anywhere. I ended up with bigger blisters on my feet than I’d ever seen (wet shoes/socks + cotton = ICK!) and, as many runners know, I learned in the shower that I had some pretty serious chafing under each of my arms. So severe that for almost 2 months I had scabs and the scars lasted another couple of years!

Why am I telling you this? Well…

After this first disaster I wasn’t finished with this marathon thing. Obviously. And, while I wasn’t ready to jump into running in a running bra and shorts I needed something different. I experimented for a few years and then one day, probably at a race expo, I saw a table for Skirt Sports!

WHAT? Skirts for running? That’s just crazy talk.

It had just so happened that I had recently been diagnosed with diabetes and the subsequent life-style changes had caused about a 20 pound weight loss. So I was ready for my legs to be out in the open!

I did suffer from a condition we like to call “Chub Rub” cause I guess it sounds cute – so I bought the original Gym Girl TRIKS (skirt spelled backwards – clever huh?!) but I also picked up a Marathon Girl or two.

Since then I’ve pretty much always run in skirts. I remember times when me showing up in my pink leopard spotted Marathon Girl was VERY unusual – and I was stopped many times to be asked about my skirts!

These might be my only remaining originals…no shorties underneath just panties

One of my most favorite marathon pictures ever is me at the NYC Marathon in my bright blue skirt

This picture was taken before everyone ran with phones that took pictures. Or, just phones 🙂

That is, until Marine Corps Marathon last year when I was out on the course in my Tantrum Lioness!!

Not a great race, but I looked pretty good, huh?!

Over the years, Nicole DeBoom has come up with a few more styles, and added in tops and capris and now, even dresses! To be honest though, the dresses were an original and are coming back in new styles this spring!!

I don’t still have all of my originals on account of that 20 pound weight loss didn’t stick around! But I definitely keep adding to my collection – super helpful now that I’m an ambassador for the company that got me to show my legs out on a run!!

Skirts, tops, shorts and more skirts!! And one or two might be in the laundry…

And now you can show your legs – or not, if you’re a capri kind of gal – for 20% off at Skirt Sport with my discount code of ORF20 – just click below and start shopping!!

March Goals!

4 Mar

hello march

I am, once more, throwing my goals for the month out here – with the intention to be a lot more accountable. So please feel free to ask/nag me about them! I’ll tell you right now, the first 4 days have been a wash so let’s not talk about the past… 🙂

So, in March, I plan to

** Drop 7.5 pounds. Seems like a pretty big goal given the last few months, but if I put my mind to it things should be all good. Plus, I have all o’ ya’ll making sure I stick to it!!
** Run a minimum of 50 miles. I have a darn half marathon coming up in something like 45 days so…yeah…And I am so far behind on my 1000 miles for the year I need to really get to work!!  It helps that I’ve got my annual St. Patrick’s Day 5Ks coming up this month too – which is always motivating for me.
** Hit at least 20 Bikram classes and if I don’t start RIGHTNOW then there are going to have to be a couple of doubles weekends in there!!

This year, I’m once again a Skirt Sports ambassador so I am working to perk up my running wardrobe a bit with a couple of new prints that have come out!

Emerald City just might become my most favorite ever (as if I could choose a favorite!!) There isn’t a lot of non-neon green out there in the running apparel world!!

emerald city

And Free Love — yeah. Love it!

free love

Along with last season’s Tantrum, I’m really getting into the prints!

You can get into the new prints – and some old favorites too!! And, with my ambassador code, you get 20% off!! Use coupon code ORF20 when you check out!!

So, let’s all get to it and show March who’s boss!!

‘Tis the Season!!

7 Oct

No…not THAT season (but that one’s coming too!!) – it’s Fall Marathon season. This is the time of year that all runners look forward to and train for and worry about!

0915_running_season_facebook

I guess my “season” started with the Disneyland Half Marathon back on Labor Day weekend — for the first time I did the entire 13.1 with a friend, and even though we didn’t chat much at all I could really feel a difference.

Then, I headed down to Florida to run the first Volition Half marathon in Orlando.

volition

Of course I had to spend some time with my fabulous friends Angela and Nate. And Na’Cho. And since I wasn’t staying on Walt Diseny World property, our good phriend Phred came along –

The weekend after we got home from Florida I joined some of my running group in tackling the first ever East Coast Beat the Blerch “race” – the biggest draw for me was — Cake. On the course. At the aid stations. Real Cake.

cake

Also cake at the finish line…LOTS of cake!!

Apart from the cake, and the friends, this wasn’t an awesome success for me – advertised as having “some ‘legit’ trails” it actually had *some* legit ROAD – 96% of the course was trail running. Technical, uphill, some downhill, roots, rocks and fallen trees technical. Needless to say, there was not a ton of running but I hung out with a couple of friends for the entire 13.1 (or, if you want to take my Map My Run’s word for it, 33.88) miles 🙂

But now, the season really starts to come alive!

And with that, the perpetual question — WHAT AM I GOING TO WEAR?!?!?

Later this week I will share all of my planned running outfits, and you can bet there’s gonna be a ton of Skirt Sports! You can have a chance to win some Skirt Gear of your own in the next couple of months – all of my fellow ambassadors are holding contests to give away their favorite item – my giveaway comes up in November. But checkout my Facebook page, or Twitter, for links to current opportunities to win.

Also – if you’re on Pinterest (and I know you are!) – We’re having another contest and chance to show your #REALwomenmove spirit! To get involved just ….

1. Follow Skirt on Pinterest
2. Create a “‪#‎REALwomenmove‬ Challenge” board and on the board pin:
-Fave Skirt gear
-Fave race
-Fave post workout treat
-Fave cross training activity
-Who (or what) is waiting for you at the finish line
-Motivations quotes (we all need them!)
‪#‎skirtsports‬ and #REALwomenmove

And even if you don’t win, head on over to Skirt Sports and use SSORF20 for 20% off of any non-sale purchases you make!! I’m sure you’ll find your favorite piece in no time!!
