Lucky 13?

29 Sep

panties

There was a half marathon this week.  It was not pretty. I mean, the course was gorgeous, my results, not so much.

So let’s get to the training wrap-up:

The Higdon plan was:
Tuesday – 3 miles
Wednesday – 5 miles
Thursday – 3 miles
Saturday – 4 miles
Sunday – 14 miles

What Anne managed to do is:
Tuesday – 3.5 miles ( had to circle my cul de sac a few times to even things up!)
Wednesday – 5.08 miles – I decided to take the time in the middle of the day to get it in since I also had to get the lawn mowed and my hair cut Wednesday night!
Thursday – walked about 2.5. Not really counting this as “done” since…well, it wasn’t 3 and I walked 🙂 But I got out there!! In the rain.
Saturday – Hogsback Half Marathon. Map My Run says I did 15.7 miles but…it was probably closer  to 13.1 😉
Sunday – decided to baby my foot (see yesterday’s recap) and did not do my 4 miles. I’m not beating myself up over that. Too much. 🙂

Now, on to this coming week! It’s a biggie since I’m heading down to Orlando to cheer on my friends in runDisney Tower of Terror 10 Miler!  That’s right, a trip to Disney and I’m *NOT* running!! Well…I’ll run…but no bling for me!! 😉

The Higdon plan for the week is:
Tuesday – 3 miles
Wednesday – 6 miles (oh no! we’re stepping things up!!)
Thursday – 3 miles
Saturday – 8 miles

The mileage is just going to keep going up until December or so…

just run

This week I will also stop by Middletown Bikram to sign up for a year or two – and start back up when I’m back in town!!  Can’t wait!!

Is there a workout that you really look forward to? Bikram is that workout for me!!

Night Time is the Right Time :)

16 Sep

It’s that time of year again!! The air is getting crisp, the days are getting short and there is pumpkin everything EVERYWHERE!

You know what else it’s time for?? A hint…

1602013_959377130754916_1464144724643648585_o

That’s right!! The two runDisney nighttime running events are coming up!!

First up is the Tower of Terror 10-Miler, the first weekend in October —

And, once again, a bunch of my blogging friends are getting together to help you out, whether this is your first ToT or you’ve done it every year! When you get to the bottom of this post, just click the link and you’ll be magically transported to all the information you could want or need!!

What I’ve decided to tell you about is really, how to spend your day to get the most out of your night!! Not only are you going to be starting a 10 mile run at 10 at night, don’t forget – there’s the Villian’s Bash following until FOUR A in the M!!! (Last year, and I don’t know why, it cracked me up when I wandered back to my hotel in my costume to pass people in the lobby heading to the airport! Okay, maybe it cracked me up because I’d been up for over 24 hours at that point!)

I’m going to mention meals, but my friend Julie over at Run, Walk, FASTPASS, Repeat has got you covered on fueling your day so check that out!!

Anyway, if you’re not used to staying up late (I’m certainly not!) and you’re definitely not a night time runner you’re going to have to be prepared. And RESTED!!

excitement

First things first though – I *know* it’s exciting to be running at Walt Disney World! Heck, even being there is a huge energy boost and there is a tendency to want to do EVERYTHING!! This is not the day for that!!

Let’s say you aren’t running the 5K Saturday morning. This means you should probably SLEEP IN if you can do that!

Sleep-Garfield

Then, have a good breakfast when you wake up.

And, I *know* it’s tough to avoid the parks but you must resist! If you must go to the parks, limit your time on your feet, take it slow and don’t feel like you need to spend the whole day there.  Let the non-running folks in your party be the park ninjas for the day!! You? You should maybe head for a pool!

pool

Personally, I think that the Florida weather makes a day at your resort pool (or your hotel pool if you’re not staying onsite) very inviting. Just remember sunscreen (nothing worse than running with a fresh new sunburn!) and, while they are very tempting, leave the pool drinks for later!! But you do need to remember to hydrate. And get up every now and then to walk around and give your legs a little wakeup! And maybe now’s a good time for a light lunch, or at least a snack.

pool_drink(2)

Just say no to this!!

Hydrate_

And say YES to lots of this!!!

I’m not a huge napper, especially when I’m at the World, but if you can nap, I’d recommend it. Plan your afternoon nap to give you plenty of – non-rushed, no-stress – time to have dinner and get dressed. If you can’t nap, at least lay on your bed for as long as you can stand it!!  If you’re taking event transportation to the start line, I’m a huge fan of getting there early. There is always a lot to do, friends to see, dancing to be done…and, less risk of stressing out over ‘traffic’!! The first bus should be at your resort around 7:15 and it’s recommended that you be on a bus no later than 8:15. So plan accordingly – and set an alarm or two!!

If you’re running Mickey’s Happy Haunted 5K you won’t be able to sleep in, but it will be super easy to get back to your room and nap!! And the good news is – you only have to wake up early ONE time this weekend!!

So there you have it — 600+ words reminding you how important it will be to stay off of your feet as much as possible on race day!! You’re gonna want to have energy for that medal-brandishing ride on Tower of Terror aren’t you?!! And hold that medal up high for the picture!!

Do you have any tips for getting to a night time run with energy to spare?!!

I’m not big on spending money — I mean, I spent a lot this year doing all of the runDisney events but that is highly irregular for me!

So, when I was at the Tower of Terror expo and stopped by the Fond Memories Graphics booth, I was “just looking”. But then….

Fast Forward to this past Thursday. I had gone to Five Guys for a birthday dinner hot dog and didn’t realize until Friday morning that I had gotten a package while I was gone:

IMAG1353

I love packages of any kind! Big and little!!

And it was from FMG!

IMAG1354

I know what this is!!!

There was lots of bubble wrap and peanuts so you KNOW it was gonna be good!

IMAG1355

Excellent! Now I have packaging materials for Christmas cookie mailing!!

And then extra wrapping!

IMAG1356

Oh…it’s even pretty through the plastic!!

Voila!!

IMAG1357

I had figured that it was very likely that I would never again run Goofy AND Dumbo in the same year again so I should celebrate the accomplishment!!

Now to find a place for it on the wall in the basement!

Tower of Terror 10 Miler

21 Oct

When last we saw our heroine, she was decidedly “taking it easy” after a 5K trail run leading to the Tower of Terror 10 Miler. After showering and getting things ready for the night, it was time to head out and meet up with some internet friends! We were getting together for lunch at Raglan Road in Downtown Disney. It’s always tough to know what to eat the night before a race, but when the race is at night, it’s even a little harder. And, how sad to be in an Irish restaurant and not able to indulge in an adult beverage or two! Given the heat and need to stay hydrated it just was not a great idea!

After lunch I headed back to the hotel to try to relax, maybe sleep. I was feeling sleepy but of course was not falling asleep at all!! So I got up and got dressed, figuring I’d get to the start line and enjoy the festivities since I was awake!

029

I put on my “Fallen Angel” costume and then decided that I couldn’t run with these wings at all! They were floppier than your traditional fairy wings 🙂 Grabbed my post race flip flops and threw a few more things in my checked bag and headed for the bus. At least this time, no one called me a Girl Scout!!

I hopped off the bus and jumped in the first line I saw – photo ops you know! After waiting maybe about 45 minutes, talking to the guy behind me (who kept saying “I don’t have the patience to wait in this line” all the way to the front of the line!) until we got to the front – then we took pictures and went our separate ways. Oh, Impatient Guy, we hardly knew ye.

004

Then I checked my bag and headed over to the best pre-race entertainment ANYWHERE – the Disney Dance Party!! Woot!! And yes, I actually danced. You would too!

034 032

Eventually it was time to move to the corrals. Again, much like this morning, the corrals were definitely well-defined and separated and as far as I could tell, people were being cool about getting in the right place! There was still an hour or so before the first group would take off and I was starting to wish I’d managed a nap…

Then the fireworks started!! The best part about Disney races starting in the dark (either before sunrise or after sunset!) is the Fireworks! Every corral gets their own special fiery sendoff!

037

For this race, there was the addition of “spooky” green laser lights flashing across the start line.

044

At last my corral took off and I have to admit I was a little afraid I wasn’t going to be able to finish…not sure why. But I stuck with my intervals as best I could and managed to stop for a few character visits along the course.

We got to run through Wide World of Sports again, and this time, we ran through Champions stadium. When we entered, there were some people in the stands, not a lot. But on the field? Well..there were some unfortunate ball players. At least, their uniforms were still on the field. I didn’t know it at the time, but that big static electricity making thing on the pitcher’s mound was a Tesla Coil – very cool effect!! Once out of WWOS we were in the home stretch and headed back to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

We ran through the park and back out to more Behind the Scenes areas until we approached the finish line – around the backside of the Hollywood Tower Hotel. I made it!! And, I think I’m finally getting back in the groove and knocking some of my minutes off. I felt good and ready for an ice cold beer and maybe a snack!

After finishing we were directed back into the park, to the Indiana Jones show stage to pick up bags

057

– and there were tents for changing. I figured there was no need for that, but I did take off my shoes and socks and got my flip flops on!! I had another meetup planned with some more internet people!! We got together for pictures and then split up.

1294587_10201713849745514_825569751_o

A few of us went on a couple of rides – after a potty stop at a super secret I’m not telling ANYONE location that had NO LINE!! First we hit Tower of Terror of course! LOVE that ride!! And, since the park was only runners and family/friends there was a very minimal line! Next up was Aerosmith Rock and Roller Coaster. Love it! And the Disney Cast Member was hilarious ad-libbing at almost 3 in the morning!! After Rocking and Rolling we headed to Toy Story Mania – during a normal day at the park it can take 2 hours to get through this line. We got in in about 20 minutes. That’s right! This is a fun, 3D arcade like ride. I’m not great at these…but fun!! Then The Great Movie Ride – Lots of people in line for this!!

By this time, it was nearly 4 in the morning and the crowd was thinning out a little. And I have to admit, I was getting a little tired!! So we headed out towards the buses and split to get back to our resorts.

This race was FUN! And I LOVED the after party!! I was so tired but at the same time pretty amped up – I ended up getting back to my room and sitting in some ice for a very short time.

031

Then a hot shower and jammies and ….laying in bed, watching the sun start to come up outside of the window! I thought it was really pretty funny when I walked into the lobby of the Port Orleans and there were people in there hauling suitcases and heading to the airport! Not sure why it was so funny – but we all laughed!!

I did finally doze off but, for the first time in my stay, Housekeeping showed up at 9 am! Good thing she woke me up – I would’ve missed out on some Food and Wine Festival fun!!

Would definitely do this one again! Not sure when…we’ll have to see about that!!

Oh yeah…bet you thought I forgot. The Bling:

And ya’ll…it GLOWS IN THE DARK!!

Happy Haunted Trail 5K (And We Can’t Forget the Expo!)

18 Oct

After spending Thursday night Trick-or-Treating my way through the Magic Kingdom I decided to take it easy on Friday…

Yeah, right! I was in Walt Disney World – there’s no “taking it easy” in WDW!!! I knew I would have to hit the expo as soon as possible (mainly to get it out of the way so I could park around!) so got up a little later than planned, made my instant oatmeal and coffee in the room and set out to wait for the bus.

But then I decided to go to one of the parks and THEN catch a bus. EPCOT was calling my name!! And it would be easy to monorail over to the Poly and catch a bus to the expo! I jumped on a couple of rides (Spaceship Earth anyone?!) and then figured it was a good enough time to head over to the expo.

After my experience at the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend expo I was braced for just about anything!! To my delight and surprise things were “normal” for an expo. But still, I wanted to get my wine glass (if they had them. They didn’t) and medallions for my nephews’ Vinylmation dolls. And maybe pins for the boys too.

I grabbed my goodies and headed to the, relatively, short line and chatted with the people around me – as one tends to do in line at runDisney expos!

After picking up my bibs and shirts for the runs the next day it was back to my room to drop off my loot – then back out to EPCOT for some International Food and Wine action!

My International Food and Wine Festival Passport

After a bit more wandering it was time for dinner and getting ready for an early day on Saturday! Ps – the muffaletta at Port Orleans is a pretty good representation – just olive-y enough!!

Got my clothes together and took a shower and hit the hay early early. Saturday would be an early start but not as early as usual for Disney events! Since this was a trail run, it wouldn’t start until after sunrise!!

My first thought when I woke up was “I don’t want to do this again tomorrow” followed immediately by “Oh yeah, I don’t have to. The second race is tonight!” I oatmealed again, got dressed and headed for the bus – thank you Fireside Girl costume for making my life easy! I had an awful lot of people calling me a Girl Scout…

The Happy Haunted Trail 5K takes place on the grounds of ESPN Wide World of Sports – starting out on the big fields.

005

Corrals were set up – very official looking this time! I didn’t notice people checking bibs but I have heard that they were there! Usually the waiting is the tough part but there was so much to look at, so many great costumes, that the time really went by fast. And then, there are the pictures!

008

There was a guest appearance by the Headless Horseman – with warnings to all to stay on the paths and not get off course. Or. Else.

The weather was uncomfortable but it definitely was warm. And the sun wasn’t up yet!

012

The course is mostly trail/grass running with a half loop around the track – running on the track brought back memories of the LAST time I was on that track at about mile 18 of the Marathon in January!

021

Running on the cushion-y track makes me feel like a REAL runner!!

There were characters out on the course – I just missed seeing Captain Hook, but got a shot with one of his men…

017

As the miles went past, things definitely heated up and I was happy to get to the finish and some cool water! And the cute medal!

003

Unless you’re a regular trail runner you probably had some difficulty with the trail portions of the course. All in all though, it was a super nice morning!!

And, the plan for post-race was definitely to take things easy — I had another 10 miles to go that night!!
