Things Get X-Treme on Thursdays in the Summer!

Yet another Hurrah to the HMF for a great event!

Connecticut has been having a heat wave. Hot. Hot and humid. “Feels like” temps in the mid-upper 90’s. So. Hot. And if you’re a runner, really hot.

HMF gets it. We want to get out there and get our miles in. But, we – for the most part- don’t want to die.

Early in the week, I got my “race update” email. The usual Thursday night Scramble was going to be a “fun” fun. Still timed but…do you really want to kill yourself for a prize worth 4 bucks? Lots of extra water planned. Misting at the water stop(s). A shorter course, cut down to 2 miles to make sure we were running mostly in the shade. Ice water pools at the finish line.

OR….you could pick up your t-shirt and number and have your beer, your burrito from Moes, your Kayem frank…and listen to some jazz.

It looked like folks were pretty evenly split between running and partying. (though, to be clear, the runners also party) I was in the group that just needed to get in my training miles!

My friend Kathy came over from Rhode Island and we met to walk over to the race. It was warm to say the least! Kath has had a couple of problems so I figured it might be a slower one for her, which is A-OK with me. I had a pre-race hot dog from the Kayem booth. It was really tasty and I hope I win some franks in their “#TrackTheTruck” contest!

Got my miles in. They were some pretty hot ones but I didn’t do too bad all things considered. Grabbed a bottle of water and went to stand in line for my beer! Hey! I have priorities!! Harpoon was there with their IPA and Summer Lager. I always choose the seasonal, IPA is kind of hoppy to me! Then, on to the Moe’s booth for my burrito! Finally it’s time to find a seat. Which means climbing some stairs. LOTS of stairs! But, there’s music and a nice view so…

The Hartford 4th of July fireworks celebration had been postponed to Thursday – the announcer kept saying they’d start at 9. Turns out that was a lie! They were starting at 9:30 and my hiney was getting sore from sitting on the grass so we decided to head home. After all, the music had stopped so it was getting harder to keep myself entertained!

It was another great X-Treme Scramble from the HMF – Hot Summer Nights indeed! Can’t wait for the next one – gonna get my disco on!

A quickie!

You know it’s been too long when I have to sign back in to WordPress!!   Things got so busy again! Or I got less motivated, something like that 🙂

I went away for a couple of days and left my laptop at home – and typing on my tablet makes me just a wee bit crazy so…

Spent a couple of evenings near our nation’s capital, and an afternoon by a pool. I must say I do enjoy working poolside!! Could there be anything better?

Things might be shaping up in the work arena – had a couple of good talks with my agency and they’re going to see about getting me more money. Cause I’m starting to get calls and I will leave for the same role that pays more! I’m not THAT stupid!! Not to mention my responsibilities at my current place keep expanding. If you know me, you know I don’t mind doing the work. What I do mind is feeling like I’m being taken advantage of.

Bikram was good this week, on the days I managed to make it! I really feel so much better when I go I need to stop talking myself out of it after work! And got my miles in, eventually. Couple of race recaps coming up.

And, is it hot enough for ya?! Heat wave breaking overnight tonight, supposedly.

Race Review – Hartford’s Red Dress Run for Women

FINALLY!! What this blog’s all about!! Some running stuff!  Let me start by saying this was

And yes, I know it’s only going to get hotter before it gets cold again but…whoa! 

Each year, the Hartford Marathon Foundation holds the Red Dress Run for Women in Elizabeth Park which is quite famous for it’s rose gardens. And rightly so! They are really gorgeous. Though at this time of year they don’t tend to be in full beautiful bloom – but there’s definitely enough rosey beauty to enjoy! And a gorgeous gazebo! There must have been a wedding here last night because the ground was covered with heart shaped glitter!

5K – starting in the park, running through the neighborhood and then back in the park! Great course with the obligatory “I HATE YOU” hills 🙂 Lots of women of all ages – and…now that I think of it, I didn’t see any men running today. Were there men registered? I don’t know! Will have to find that out!!

Was wearing a lot of my favorite things today! From the bottoms of my feet to my shirt! New Balance runDisney shoes, KT Tape holding my foot to my ankle, Team Sparkle skirt – in black – and my Raw Threads “bow” tank! And, of course, in my belly, Energy Bits and later, a Power Crunch bar in chocolate.

Anyway – got lots of water in before starting. Left my watch at home – not 100% intentionally! It was nice to start off in the shade and a lot of the course actually is pretty shady and on a day like today, every little bit helps!

Parking is at UCONN and buses run you up to the park and back. There’s a little health fair type thing going on at the start/finish area – picked up some Ola Granola samples. YUMS! Will be great in a fruit and yogurt parfait.

The HMF always does a really great job with the post-race snacks! Today was a strawberry / yogurt parfait (back when I first did this race a few years ago it was strawberry shortcake and some amazing Panera sugar cookies!!) – and I bet it was that great Ola Granola that was adding crunch!

Once I ate half my parfait I hopped on the bus and sweated my way back to my car (thank you remote starter for getting my car cooled off before I got in!).

I was really looking forward to putting some great race reviews out here for you this weekend.

But, today I got “punched in the mouth”. Or, it’s much more apt to say I got punched in the stomach. Sucker punched even!

I was up and ready to go. Followed the same plan as always. Dressed, coffee, banana…walked the dog! Felt. GREAT! Was looking forward to a beautiful day – driving around in my happy convertible listening to really bad music!

First stop was going to be The Run Back to the 80’s 5K. Seriously. How could this be wrong?? 80’s music and people who have only seen the 80s in music videos and movies dressed in bad 80s running costumes.

All was well until I got about 10 minutes from the venue – I started feeling pretty queasy. Figured it would pass so kept on going…parked. Head started aching a little (I’m sure hitting it on the latch of the car trunk didn’t help) but I headed over to meet the friend I was running with but before I got very far I felt an IMMEDIATE need to get to the ladies room. And let me tell you I was so happy to see this….

I just didn’t realize exactly how much time I would be spending here…(here’s where it might get a little gross but, a review is a review right? Good bad and ugly!!)

On my first visit, my body was divested of all the coffee I’d had. Probably the banana too. I felt like I could get up and walk but sent a text to tell my friend I would likely not be running today. Cleaned up and went out to find him. Felt okay so went to get my bib and shirt. Grabbed a cup of water and took a few sips.

BAD IDEA.

Once the water is expelled there is nothing left to go, but it’s like my body doesn’t even know this! So it was digging DEEP to just get out whatever was bothering me…which as far as I could tell was – NOTHING!

Went out to the car, got ready to head home after asking the man to tell me how to get home without getting on the highway. The last thing I needed was to have to pull over in 70-80 mile an hour traffic to heave on the side of the road. Got my directions, made one more trip to the potty and headed home.

Here’s where I might have made a bad decision – though in the end I think it turned out okay. I happened to pass a sign for Packet Pickup (I’m volunteering at a golf tournament today and packet pickup was one of the things on my list to get done today) and figured I should do it since today is the last day I could.

Pulled in to the parking lot and knew that it was crucial that I find the nearest Ladies’ room…so I went in and signed in at the volunteer table (where I could barely even speak, my mouth was so dry) and asked where the bathrooms were! Found them, suffered a bit in the stall, and then had the BRILLIANT idea that laying on the cold tile would feel really good!! I did not lay on them but I did find a corner and sit. For about a half hour! Then I felt good enough to go get my things and get back in the car.

The rest of the trip was uneventful – except for being just an absolutely beautiful day and a gorgeous drive. And now I’m hating that it IS such a great day outside and I’m kind of stuck inside til I can rehydrate

So, no race review this afternoon. Tomorrow I have a 3.3 mile trail run scheduled so we’ll see how that goes.

PS – My friends at Dr. Google tell me that if a diabetic starts vomiting for, apparently, no reason they should head immediately to a doctor – could be ketoacidosis. I did not do this so I am, again, a BAD DIABETIC. I of course only read about this after I’d gotten home and comfy. If I continue to feel bad, I will contact a real medical professional.

Today has been so very exciting so far! Well…exciting might not be the right word….

I had my first chance at my new job to work from home and almost had a panic attack when I had problems connecting to the VPN — still managed to get in by 6 and get crackin’!

Then, I had a dentist appointment. Since I’m getting older and getting diabetic, I go every 4 months instead of every 6. And generally I have pretty good teeth if I do say so myself. Though, I *have* noticed some bleeding when I floss, which is never a good sign. Of course when the hygienist started poking around with sharp tools it looked like open heart surgery in my mouth — the blood was flowing. Apparently I have a lot of “deep pockets” of “bacteria” around some crowns and they are crawling to adjacent teeth and areas of my mouth (yes, I too was picturing a mouth full of bugs thankyouverymuch.) So we did some “irrigating” and she shot some antibiotics in the worst spots (three worst spots…THREE!!). Other than that, however, “You really do have good dental hygiene habits”. Yeah. Thanks. I do floss regularly and I use a Sonic Care brush — which I highly recommend!

After an HOUR in the dentist chair, I headed over to my doctor. That whole diabetic thing means I should go see him every 3 months to keep up on my A1c readings. I am wishing I had skipped today! Turns out that my A1c is at the level it was when I was first diagnosed 5.5 years ago.

This means that I am back at square one. Though, about 30 pounds lighter than when I was first diagnosed. And much more active than I was then. AND much more careful about what I put in my mouth at mealtime! So it shouldn’t be too difficult to get things back in control.

  • I will probably continue some form of Whole30 or Paleo eating for longer than 30 days.
  • I will have to get back in the habit of more regular testing during the day so I can catch high numbers before they get too bad
  • I will have to be MUCH more consistent with running and yoga and all other activity – which I was planning on anyway given I have some big races in the fall!

I’ve done it before, and I know I can do it again!!!
