I May Have a Donut Problem: Myrtle Beach Half Marathon – Race Recap

10 Mar

Well, here we are again!! Time for the first recap of the year!!

I’m not sure exactly why I registered for this race…it could’ve been the fairly low cost, it could’ve been the 20th anniversary medal, it could have been that I just needed a change of scenery – even if only for a very short weekend.

Probably all of the above actually!

Anyway…

As is my habit, I waited awhile to make my reservations and was lucky enough that one of the host hotels not only had rooms available but was also Phred Phriendly (this is huge for me!). My plan was to do an overnight drive since it’s about a 13 hour drive.

Gratuitous shot of Phred lounging on the bed in his room…

I worked at home that Thursday thinking I could wrap up early and then hopefully get in a nap. This did not happen. But I did get packed, gt the car fueled up and relaxed for a few hours. After a false start (in which I actually left my bag with my wallet at the house…) I grabbed a cup of Dunkin – for free ya’ll, guy couldn’t open a register! – and hit the road. Using trusty Waze AND Google Maps I hit the interstate around midnight.

By the time I got to New Jersey I was TAHRED!! So very tired that I pulled into a service area figuring I could get a short 20 minute nap in. This did not happen. But I did close my eyes for a bit and that seemed to help. Potty break for me and the Phred and we were heading south again!

Whenever I would see ‘cheap’ gas I would stop and top off…which always adds a half hour or more. Plus coffee refills plus more potty breaks!

EVENTUALLY….

We made it to Myrtle Beach, around noon-ish, got checked into the resort and hauled all my stuff to the room.

My plan now was to hit the expo, walk the Phred, find some dinner (and, since the forecast was dramatically different than it had been when I packed, try to find an inexpensive running jacket. This did not happen)

Expo was small, but everyone was friendly! Did a quick loop and chatted with a couple of random strangers – what? You don’t do that at race expos?!! Got my gear/swag

Front of the shirt and some 20th Anniversary sox from The Sock Guy!

Back of shirt

Walked Phred around the facility and then headed to Target / Walmart to find something to wear. Only made it to Target and they didn’t really have what I was looking for. I did pick up some headphones since I’d left mine behind.

Then dinner. This could be a problem on account of my usual pre-race meal on the road is meat and potatoes (meatloaf, burger…that sort of thing) and this was the first Friday in Lent. No way was I going to chance fish the night before a race and I didn’t even think – until this morning actually – that I could’ve probably found somewhere to get eggs.

So I said a prayer and grabbed a burger at Sonic. Which…Yum!!!

Got back to the room, laid out my clothes for Saturday

As you can see…not so prepared for mid-30 temps!!

And settled in to my dinner and early bedtime. It was a 6:30 start and shuttles were only running until 5.

Woke up hoping that somehow the forecast had gone back to a mid-40’s temp at the start. This did not happen 🙂 So I threw on my trusty Lioness and my Exhale Bra Tank as well as a throw away long sleeve tshirt and mylar blanket and headed for the shuttle.

We were dropped at a local Minor league baseball stadium where it was windy and cold! But the stadium was open and we could use those facilities. Which was NICE!

About 6:10 or so everyone headed to the start – which caused some congestion but nothing too dramatic.

I had decided on 45:30 intervals. I am not sure why I made this decision but I did. And I pretty much stuck with it the whole way.  It seemed to take a few miles for my Map My Run app to sync up with the mile markers on the course but eventually that straightened out. As much as the app is every matching the mile markers on the course!

I made one important stop shortly after Mile 2

It took so long cause they had to cook my donut!!

Mmmnomnomnom

But then stayed on my intervals for most of the next 11 or so miles. Eventually it warmed up – and then the last 3 miles were in the shade 🙂 By then I realized I was doing pretty okay and didn’t mind.

I *do* think that the cold kept a lot of spectators indoors – my friend had told me that the crowd support was really great when she did it last year. But the folks that were out were awesome!!

I managed to finish in under 3. By the clock I was barely under 3 – that Mile 2 stopped knocked me down by about 4 minutes  or so..I was happy and actually greeted by a kind volunteer handing out  — you guessed it — Krispy Kreme donuts. It would’ve been rude not to take one.

20th Anniversary Medal and some swaggy sunglasses!

After grabbing my bag I got in line for the post-race food , where another kind volunteer had more sweet goodness. And I’m not rude ya’ll.  Post race food was  fruit cups, pizza, bananas, and….yes…more donuts. LOTS more donuts. I may or may not have taken another (spoiler, I *did* take another but couldn’t eat the whole thing…my beer filled me up too much!!) The pizza was pretty amazing too!!

There was a great band playing and I listened for a bit before heading back for the shuttle and a shower!

Spent the afternoon with my friend having a wander and a snack (and a beer)  and getting a tour of Myrtle Beach. By 5:30 I was ready for bed. Again 🙂 Which was fine – took a quick stroll on the beach with Phred then passed out while watching TV.

Up early and packed on Sunday morning – I was meeting more friends for Brunch at House of Blues – which I HIGHLY recommend!

Then Phred and I hit the road for our trip home – I was happy to not be driving overnight again.

Some race stats:
Starting Blood Sugars – not good. I check right at the start and I was at 142 and “falling rapidly”

This is not good…

Finish Line Blood Sugars – around 150.
Note: I think my sensor was out of whack due to the wearing of the mylar blanket so I don’t have much on the road info.
I did consume ALL of the fuel I had with me – 2 Laffy Taffy and 2 Applesauce packets. Could’ve used one more applesauce because I did have a couple of shaky moments.
Per Map My Run– I ran 13.39 Miles in 2:54:17 – average pace 13:01. I didn’t neg split but I did keep all of my splits under 14. So I will conclude that for now the 45:30 is the way to go!

I’m on Auto-Pause on the app so it stopped when I waited, apparently nearly 6 minutes, for my donut!

I’m happy with this…

Bad News– Somewhere after mile…maybe 6? … I lost my flower. I am hoping that some other lady who might have been struggling picked it up and then looked up the the meaning over on the Fellow Flowers website

Also, there was a TON of Skirt Sports out on the course and I accosted a few of the ladies after the race to hear how they love their skirts! So of course I offered them my 20% off code (1SSCAPT20 fyi!)

Coming Up:
March 11 – O’Shenanigans in Cheshire CT (this is a new one so we’ll see how it is!)
March 12 – O’Putnam in Putnam CT (will spend the night at Kathy’s in RI to be close to the race)

Also, I may as well do this week’s training recap right now cause…well…
I have been lazy and eating like crap ever since I got home. That is all.

But I have started Planking again and it’s as if I never have planked before! I’m 3 days in and up to 30 seconds

Happy FriYay Eve everyone — hope you have some great things planned for your weekend!!!

WDW Marathon Weekend – The Dopey Challenge: 10K

17 Jan

Day 2 of the Dopey Challenge happened to also be Day 1 of the Na’Cho Challenge – an added ‘bonus’ challenge supporting adoptabull – English Bulldog Rescue, Na’Cho being the name of one of our favorites!!

So, after being *slightly* unprepared for Thursday’s 5k – cold temps, forgot my music, phone died (okay, not ALL was my fault!) – I put most of my things together before bed, since we had to be at the 10K start even earlier!

009

Nearing the end…World Showcase!!!

I was making an attempt at a PNK costume but put the letters under my jacket…by the time I warmed up enough to take off my jacket the letters weren’t sticking so good…so I was just in pink and purple, but lots of people “got it”!!

Met up with my Facebook running group again for pictures and motivation

pre10krtd

Best Running Group in the World!

before heading to the back BACK of the pack. We smartened up a little though and made our way to the front of the back corral — every second counts you know!!

003

The 10K course is really not much to write home about…a lot of highway running then a trip through EPCOT World Showcase. This cute couple was running in front of me most of the time — I tried several times to get a picture of their shirts but had to steal borrow this one from a friend.

cutecouple

The shirts say that they are getting married on Jan 9 at 2 pm (yes, that’s today)…

I wasn’t terribly interested in characters on the course – I had my mental list of who I HAD to get and…well, look who I ran into!!

011

I thought it would be fun to post my splits — you can definitely see where I waiting in line for the picture with Genie. Well worth it!! He’s the one character that I always MUST get out on the course!

025

Post-race before I headed back to the resort I had one VERY important stop to make….

021

I still love you Dopey!!

Tracy went on ahead and decided to go to Downtown Disney and I had plans with my RTD friends.

epicjunglecruise

The Jungle Cruise of Epicness.  Yeah…that’s right, we had about 18-20 people together who would be making this a cruise to remember for EVERYONE on board!!

junglecruisechaos

Let’s just say it was loud…and kind of chaotic!! But, man, was it fun!!!

But, tomorrow was another long day, so after roaming around the park a bit with a couple of friends, we kind of split up and headed home…or…some stayed in the park to snack!

I headed to the Beach Club, grabbed a sandwich and got my things together — tomorrow, we had entry to the Race Retreat so the plan was to leave a little early and have our breakfast there before meeting up again! At least it would be a warm place to wait!

And, oh yeah, the most important part of the day – the bling!

This one is Minnie’s Race!!

The Main Event – runDisney Princess Half Marathon!

19 Mar

It was here, and I was ready. Well, I was ready for it to be here but knew it was going to take my innate stubbornness to cross the finish line standing up!!

phone 054

All set! MagicBand, Glass Slipper wristband and Race Retreat wristband

Once more, the alarms went off. I set them a little extra early since someone had very kindly given me entry to the Race Retreat for the Half Marathon. The good part of this is that I didn’t need to worry about making sure I had food in my room for breakfast – there would be bagels and water and coffee and fruit. On top of that, special “private” porta-potties, a separate bag-check, cel-phone charging lockers, mats for stretching and special character appearances!

Princess Half Weekend 129

The Mad Hatter and I made breakfast plans for later in the weekend…

I found my group, we settled in at a table to wake up and get nourished! Before we knew it it was time to head out to meet up with the rest of our group to grab some pictures and then start the trek to the corrals. Unfortunately, we missed some of our folks but managed a couple of pictures with the ones still hanging around.  Then it was off to the race!

Princess Half Weekend 142

The starting line…no real turning back now!!

I was lucky to be starting the race with friends, even if we weren’t going to be able to stay together the whole time. It makes the time go a little more quickly in the corrals if there are people to talk to. As is customary at runDisney events, each corral is sent out with their own special fireworks (and one of these days I’ll manage a good picture of it!!)

My plan was to take as much time as I needed – walk when I had to but run when it felt good. I was comfortable with this idea and my only concern was finishing in time to get my challenge medal! Since the course was familiar to me, I felt like I knew what to expect and when I might end up in trouble!

As always it was great to head up Main Street USA and see the castle in the distance!

Princess Half Weekend 146

Foggy day — which means you can’t see the crane behind the castle!!

Fortunately, I was able to keep up a fairly decent, though slow, pace and was never in any danger of getting swept. It was nice to be able to make a couple of stops for pictures with one or two of my favorites along the way!

Princess Half Weekend 150

Really, one of these days he WILL grant me a wish!

Princess Half Weekend 152

A crowd favorite! And I got him to smile!!

Throughout the course, I was leap-frogging with several of my friends and it was always nice to get the encouragement when needed! Around Mile 8 or so, V and I kind of got together and were both ready to be finished! So for the last few miles we pretty much stayed together – talking, encouraging, planning… This was the first time I’d run with someone and I liked it! It was nice to have someone to cross the finish line with! And, to keep me from accidentally quitting (not that I think I am even able to quit — I might have to be seriously injured and hauled off of the course!)

And of course, the other motivation to finish quickly was to get breakfast!

phone 058

Okay…maybe I had Diet Coke for breakfast…

Again, the Race Retreat came to the rescue! Scrambled eggs, bacon (thanks to the fellow runner who dug some crispy bacon out for me!), muffins, bagels, coffee, fruit, oatmeal, yogurt…If I wasn’t already planning lunch at Be Our Guest (travel hint — FastPass+ for lunch! and ps – I still want to do dinner there at least once!) I could have completely overdone it !

After relaxing a bit, V and I celebrated with a glass of champagne and went out to get on our respective buses. But not without these babies!!

phone 061

The reward.

I had hoped to meet up with some folks on my way to my BOG lunch but it took me longer to clean up and re-dress than expected! But I made it back to the Magic Kingdom in time for my lunch – which was a completely different experience from your usual Quick Service lunch!

Princess Half Weekend 154

This was pretty easy — ordering on the kiosks

It starts out when you check in and are brought into the Beast’s Study — this is where you are going to make your menu selection and get a “rose” — You touch your MagicBand to the kiosk, make your selections and then touch the rose to the kiosk. Easy Peasy.

Princess Half Weekend 153

So it has a picture of a rose anyway!

The room is seat yourself and feels really large and loud. Beverage stations are against one wall, silverware is in carts around the room. Your meal is brought to you on carts — pretty fancy to see my lone turkey sandwich and strawberry cupcake riding in a huge cart all alone!

Princess Half Weekend 155

The main dining room is gorgeous!!

Lunch was good, my illegal cupcake was even quite good — fresh strawberry tasting!

phone 062

Strawberry cupcake! Next time I need to try some Grey Stuff though!

Once I was done, I was ready to spend some Magical time in the Magic Kingdom! Tomorrow I was heading home, but there was still fun in store!!

Wine and Dine? Yes Please!

4 Mar

So, yes, I know I have some Glass Slipper recapping to do but time to get another runDisney event on my calendar! The only other one I plan to do this year in fact.

Registration opens today for the Fifth Annual Wine and Dine Half Marathon weekend! And, given that it’s an anniversary year there should be some nice bling!

I ran this one last year and really need to just redeem myself!

So I’ll be ready when things open up  – though generally this even doesn’t sell out as fast as the ‘biggies’ I still want to be sure to get in there!!

Playing Catch Up!

7 Jan

It’s been an internet-free weekend (plus some) so I have some catching up to do. You know, resolutions and goals to share, wrapping up of 2013 and probably some general bitching and moaning as well as the usual boring stuff I’m sure!!

Seeing all of my friends posting on the Twitters and Facebook about heading down to Orlando is bringing me back to this time last year.

I was one of them! In fact, even though I wasn’t heading down until Thursday I was completely backed by the Tuesday before – so yeah, I was really excited! I was doing the runDisney Goofy “Race and  a Half” Challenge. It was the start of my year of running Disney. Yeah, I #ranalltheraces at the Disney Parks. And it were good!!

But I kicked the year off with a little 39.3 (plus the 5K…so 41.4!) —

Photo0004FourBySix

I hope everyone has safe travels and a really SUPER Magical time!! There is nothing like a runDisney event! And this one is gonna be the GrandDaddy of them all!! I plan on being there next year for the not-so-new-by-then #DopeyChallenge!

Special Delivery!

16 Nov

I’m not big on spending money — I mean, I spent a lot this year doing all of the runDisney events but that is highly irregular for me!

So, when I was at the Tower of Terror expo and stopped by the Fond Memories Graphics booth, I was “just looking”. But then….

Fast Forward to this past Thursday. I had gone to Five Guys for a birthday dinner hot dog and didn’t realize until Friday morning that I had gotten a package while I was gone:

IMAG1353

I love packages of any kind! Big and little!!

And it was from FMG!

IMAG1354

I know what this is!!!

There was lots of bubble wrap and peanuts so you KNOW it was gonna be good!

IMAG1355

Excellent! Now I have packaging materials for Christmas cookie mailing!!

And then extra wrapping!

IMAG1356

Oh…it’s even pretty through the plastic!!

Voila!!

IMAG1357

I had figured that it was very likely that I would never again run Goofy AND Dumbo in the same year again so I should celebrate the accomplishment!!

Now to find a place for it on the wall in the basement!

No, I Didn’t Forget the Bling!!
