New-ish Month, New Challenges

5 Jun

So we’re now into June and summer seems to really be coming in with no hesitation!!

That means, running needs to be done pretty darn early! And, of course this is when I really need to kick my training into gear — time is ticking away and I know that the Marine Corps Marathon will be here before I know it! Followed way too closely by my #Dopey15 runDisney challenge…and even more.

I do have a couple of race recaps and vacations to recap this weekend so I can be caught up too!

But, first, ya’ll know I was doing a couple of DietBets last month and I managed to squeak by and win them both (with a pound or two to spare). I turned around and put the winnings from my first win (don’t know what I won from the second yet!) into 2 more for this month!

And I have to tell you people….it was a little more stressful than I thought it would be but those last couple of days were definitely motivation to keep it going more consistently this time around.

In case you’re interested, you can sign up here for the “small” DB  http://diet.bt/1p6dG8q

And here for the BIG game! http://diet.bt/1p6elHd

Seriously, if you’re signing up for one, you may as well sign up for two. I mean, you only increase your chance of winning right? And definitely let Patty know that I sent you!! 😉

And I’m also repeating my wall sit/plank/arm challenge from May since I fell off of that wagon around the 23rd…and I can say that I’m good for 5 days!!

And, important culture note: Tomorrow is National Donut Day — so head out and get some round goodness in your belly! A group of my friends have organized a virtual “Donut Run” — so I’ll head to my local Dunkin Donuts in the morning (before the dentist of course!) on foot, and grab some nom and run back home!

Two-fer Thursday!

No, not cocktails, but reviews and recaps!!

The Rent t-shirt

Tonight was the Hartford Marathon Foundation 2nd Annual Rentschler Airfield 5K. This event benefits the East Hartford Police Officer Brian A. Aselton Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc. which provides scholarships to children of police officers and local criminal justice students. Fast and flat – and this really was as advertised!

But first…the race kicked off at Cabela’s – a super-mega “outdoorsman” type of store. The kind of place where you think you’ll see a bunch of guns and cammo and manly man stuff. And you do!! There’s a big mountain in the middle of the store and the inside of the mountain is an aquarium! Two floors of hunting and camping goodness – I seriously could spend loads of time in there looking at all the cool stuff I might not every use!!

002

What I would be looking for would be a cute little camouflage t-shirt (I didn’t see one on this short trip!) and what I would spend lots of time drooling over would be the assorted snacks and goodies – particularly the fudge. The millions of flavors of fudge (I am, after all, my mother’s daughter!)

I will be going back. You should drop in – it’s not just for campers and hunters and sweets-lovers!!

Then I headed out to the parking lot to get ready for the 5K. Advertised as Flat and Fast. Yeah…I’ve heard that one before. But this time it was true!! It’s run on some old airfields..runways and towers and all!

004 005

There was quite a nice breeze and the humidity was not nearly as oppressive as it’s been lately. I went out with the intention of doing some Jeff Galloway intervals and I managed to stick with it for most of the way. And took a minute or so off of my time from last weekend! Yay me!!

003

The finish line came complete with burgers, donuts and beer. The faster people also got ice cream! The burgers were provided by Cabela’s. Beer provided by Olde Burnside Brewing Co. makers of the tasty Ten Penny Ale. And the donuts. Oh. My. The Donuts. Simple, apple cider cinnamon sugar donuts. Warm. So light and at the same time really crispy and sugary on the outside…for a moment there, I forgot that my true love Dunkin’ Donuts even existed. I’m sorry. Where did these come from you ask? Well, Faddy’s Donuts & Ice Cream now have a very special place in my heart. Definitely well worth skipping the bun on my burger!!

007

Did I mention they were WARM!!

So, 5K aside, and I do enjoy these after work events, I’ll be doing this one again next year!

….off the wagon…

12 Jun

Well, it happened….

 wagon

Tonight I stopped to pick up some bananas and grapes (and check out the apples) on my way home from work…

Then these fell into my basket….

And this….

Still haven’t opened them so I could return them..

Strange the things that tempted me when I was surrounded by donuts and pies and pizzas and cupcakes…

Let’s Eat All The Things!!!

11 Jun

Or, how my second week of Whole30 is going…

Finally back from vacation, Finally ready to buckle down and kick this thing into gear! So, I’ve got my fruits, I’ve got my veggies, I’ve got protein out the as…well, you see where I’m going with this. I’ve thrown out the milk even and bought coconut milk for my coffee!

This should be a piece of cake. Mmmmm….cake…

First day back things went pretty well…I slipped and put half and half in my first cup of coffee…but other than that, I was about 85% on track. I might have eaten some cheese.

Friday was tough cause it was National Donut Day. And, if you need to know anything about me, you need to know that I have a serious…SERIOUS, sweet tooth (yeah, it doesn’t make being diabetic very easy!) and I have a definite affinity for the little round fried goodies. And, as I may or may not have mentioned, the lobby of my office building contains a Dunkin Donuts! But, as luck would have it, I woke up feeling kind of punky on Friday and not even a donut could tempt me to eat. So…I was pretty much on track only cause I was drinking water and eating an apple all morning!

Friday night I might have had some cheese and wine…

wine glass half full

Saturday and Sunday were easy days to stay on track since I have no temptations in the house!

Back at work – packing a lunch was the best plan since we have no vending machines in the office ( that I know of…)

But today? Today I want to EAT EVERTHING IN SIGHT! With a definite preference for things that might be termed “crap”…luckily, none available!

  Candy-Bars

So, even on days that I’ve slipped up, overall I’m definitely making some better choices and thinking twice before putting something in my mouth!

It can only get easier, right?!!

Thank God it’s Friiiiiday!

17 May

If you now have that song in your head A. you’re old, dude! and 2. My work here is done!!

Happy it’s Friday – but I would be even if I wasn’t working. The dude is coming back home this weekend (and he will hate that he’s mentioned here so mentions will be VERY limited – unless he does something absolutely worthy of mountain-top shouting!) which is always a good Friday!

Now,  I’m sure we are all very happy I made it through week one of my new job without stomping off like a big baby cause I have nothing to do!! The people I sit with (in some funky, four desk configuration that has me staring at three people all day!) are nice. One is only a week ‘older’ than me at this company. My boss is nice and has great plans for piling my work on….eventually. Suffice to say, nothing is being piled on the first week. It never is! (Note to people who hire me: I’ve been working for a BAZILLION years…I pick up on things pretty quick so I can handle running some Excel Macros…)

People-wise things are good. My Big Boss is pretty laid back and the fact that she looks like my best, oldest friend helps. Like, she REALLY looks like Eydie so it will be tough for me to not think she’s Eydie! The other two guys I work most closely with are, I think, being careful to not overwhelm me with my tasks. I sit with three other people, all contractors like me (though I think one might be an intern). One of the gals is only here til/through June I think. The other just started last week. And then there’s the “intern”.

One of my “office” mates and I have decided to take a long walk every day which is going to be nice. It’s good to get out and see the city. She’s done counseling in the city for the last 10 years so a lot of the homeless people we walk past actually know her and they all seem to love her!! I’m learning about lots of cool things that go on in the city – free stuff to do!

So, while I’m not making the money I was making before I am, so far, liking things…we’ll have to see how long this lasts! As long as they keep giving me more to do I’ll be fine. But, sitting in an office getting paid to do nothing is NOT the cake job people think it would be 🙂

Plus…loads of free coffee and hot chocolate! And, have I mentioned Dunkin Donuts in the lobby??

Have a super Friday night!! Get out there and Boogie!
