Delayed Race Recap and Links Galore!!!

30 Jun

This recap has been a month in the making! Not quite sure why but…here we go!

About a month ago – okay, exactly a month ago – I went down to Williamsburg,VA to run an 8K. What? What’s 8K? About 4.97!  Seems like quite a way to go for such a short race, but not at all!!

Thanks to Rana over at Destination26pt2 I had an entry to the Run for the Dream 8K!! Yay for great blogger giveaways!! And, for future reference I plan on doing the Patriot’s Challenge one of these years!! (or maybe it’s Patriots…anyway) Rana was running the half marathon Sunday and on of the weekend goals was to get together so I could thank her in person. Spoiler alert: Didn’t happen but again Thank you so much for introducing me to this event, Rana!!!

As often happens, I put off making any reservations or plans until about the Monday before I was heading down – so thank you also, for the great deal on my room!! I stayed at the Governor’s Inn, right outside of the Colonial town. I mean RIGHT outside!

I also happened to remember (duh!) that one of my favorite people from college lives in VA Beach which I know is *kind of* close (turns out it’s about 45 minutes away!) and much texting ensued and our day out was “planned” — I mean, we knew we would do something, just not sure exactly what that would be!!

Anyway…about the race! The Governor’s Inn was an ‘official” race hotel which meant it was convenient and close to the expo/packet pickup!

I had to get to the expo by 7 on Friday since the race was an early starter with no race day pickup, at least I didn’t want to count on it! The drive down was uneventful and I checked in to my room around 1 or so. Nothing fancy – a fridge and a tv in addition to my beds! I dropped my things and headed over to packet pickup at the Williamsburg Conference Center. It was small, with a few vendors which is fine for me since I rarely shop expos!

In addition to a bib and a tshirt we also got a pair of socks, a one day pass to Colonial Williamsburg and…very unexpected for me, a ticket to Busch Gardens!!! (Unfortunately I just wasn’t up to an amusement part on this trip…). I eventually grabbed some dinner and headed to bed – early day tomorrow!

Woke up and dressed in some patriotic colors to honor those who serve in any and all of the branches of our military

Thank you @sparkleathletics #TeamSparkle

Though briefly about driving to the start but: A. it was REALLY CLOSE and B. Traffic –

Yeah…this was the line of cars to get into the parking lot about 20 minutes before the start of the race!

The start was the parking lot of the Conference Center — There were no real corrals but we were expected to try to line up based on pace…so I moved back. By the time things started through, I was more in the middle!! Sorry faster people who wanted to get around me 🙂

The course took us all through Williamsburg, including through the Colonial Village (which, I didn’t realize, people actually live here!! Pretty cool!!)

An out and back at the Governors Palace

Running back in time…

We also ran a loop through the College of William and Mary — Gorgeous!! The only downside was that part where we ran RIGHT PAST the football stadium where the finish line was hiding!!!

But eventually I made it!! One of the sponsors of the event was Chik-fil-a and you know I can’t resist a character photo op, right?!

Plus, a cow dressed as a Princess…

My times lately have been pretty slow but I’m back out there – trying to avoid any more injuries (or worsening ones that might still be hanging on!)

I would highly recommend taking part in these events! And there’s a plus if you like history and amusement parks!! This area has it all!!

After the run, I went back and showered, had breakfast and headed out for a day of history!

And even though this is a race recap, I can’t end without a short bit on Sunday. Sharon came and we ended up spending MANY great hours wandering through Williamsburg — and ended the afternoon with a drink before I had to hit the road (don’t worry, the chatting went on at least another 2 hours!!) And even though this is technically a race recap, I have to say how much I love spending time with Sharon and we don’t do it nearly enough! But big plans are in the works for this winter!!!

How is it possible that she looks exactly the same as she did in college???
