This past weekend I participated in a new event – put on by Eident Racing. This was the first ever Harvest Wine Run – held in Newport Rhode Island at the Newport Vineyards.
The race start was in the afternoon, to be followed by wine tasting and a BBQ dinner – so you KNOW I was in for this! Short 5K run through the vineyards and along a nature preserve trail. Not a piece of asphalt in sight!!
Given that I have a 10-miler coming up as well as a couple / few half marathons, I took my time – last thing I wanted was to end up falling in a hole. And, being clumsy, the odds were pretty good that this is where I’d end up!!
I steadily picked my way along the course, enjoying the views, and the breeze and the anticipation of a nice few sips of wine!
BBQ was supplied by The Preppy Pig BBQ and it was tasty! I enjoyed it all, especially the cornbread (of course!) and sausage!!
The only drawback, in my opinion, is that race day bib pickup was kind of long, since I am guessing a lot of people weren’t from the area and had to pick up. So the race started about 15 minutes late but after that things went quite smoothly!
Included in our race packet was a coupon for 5 dollars off a purchase in the Vineyard store. And the coupon said “MUST BE USED TODAY”…so I used it on a bottle of the Newport Great White – but tasted a few others that I really enjoyed and would probably pick up again! The Pinot Grigio was good as well. The reds that I tasted were lighter reds – and as we are nearing “Red Wine Season” at my house I was looking for something a little heartier!
This is an event I would most definitely do again! I would even possibly find a room over in Newport and do early packet pickup and stay for a little extra wine tasting at the vineyard.
Thanks to Newport Vineyards and Eident Racing for a great event!!
