Summer has finally come to New England – though it seems like we skipped over Spring entirely!
I used to live in California where it is pretty much always summer. (And people from California will argue that “no, we have seasons here” but really, no, you don’t!) For me, year round summer gets pretty boring. I like “weather” – I love thunderstorms, I love snow storms, I love hot days at the beach.
One of my favorite summer activities – and I use ‘activities’ very loosely – is ending my day in the hammock with my dog. This is not my hammock, unfortunately.
Summer adds a whole new dimension to marathon training too. It adds heat and humidity. I’m not fast on a good day but dial up the hot and wet and I may as well be crawling. And, since “Marathon Season” tends to be Autumn/Winter-ish, summer is serious “Training Season”
There are loads of resources out there on handling this additional hurdle but the best advice I’ve seen, and follow myself, is
- Listen to your body – ALWAYS.
- Anticipate being slower, don’t push for any kind of PR in high hot and humid weather
- Hydrate + electrolytes – whatever form you take these in, make sure you get them in. Also. Salt.
You can still get your miles in – start earlier in the day, run after work/dark, treadmill if you must (and have access). Just be smart about it!!
Oh, and make sure you enjoy the summer – take yourself to the beach at least once! Or mix yourself a fruity cold cocktail and pretend your backyard is the beach!
