Keepin’ it Real…

12 May

Okay. I have a confession. I am addicted to certain reality tv shows. Cooking ones. Rachael and Guy’s Celebrity Challenge? Oh yeah. Cupcake Wars? You betcha! Master Chef, Hells Kitchen? Amen! I don’t think I could win but I’d be happy to go out in the first round! Then there’s that Donald Trump and his Apprentices…let’s not even talk about that condo in Manhattan they get to live in!!

A few years ago, I thought that people who cared who won Survivor were kind of…well.. ya know… Then a friend of mine lent me the copies of ALL of the prior seasons of this reality television masterpiece and I was hooked. I mean, I’d have friends over on Thursday to watch (til it moved to Wednesday and then…well…). Even watching by myself I yell at the tv. Cause I’m sure they’re all listening.  I have my favorites each season and generally they don’t win. I mean Brenda got voted off last week so my choice is out! I think people get too big for their britches and don’t think that they have to go live out in public after this. Or maybe they think that people will love them as much as they love themselves!

Once, before Survivor became the reality tv phenomenon that it is, a friend of mine walked into my office (yeah, I actually had a real office back then!) and said “Hey, there’s this new show coming on. Survivor I think. You go out and live in the wild on your own and can win a million dollars. Here’s the application!” and handed me an 8 page printed out app.  I started filling it out, skipping the questions that required to much introspection – I’d go back to those later, right? I never did fill the whole thing out, and I don’t think she did either.  Kind of a bummer. This was in the days before they went out and hunted down pretty people to be on the show. Now I’d be the token “older woman” who would be targeted because of my perceived lack of ability (yes. perceived! I am quite able!). Frankly though, I’m not a fan of the bugs and worms and stuff so it’s probably best I never made it!!

So tonight while I’m watching, I think I would like Dawn or Sherry to win…but probably one of the boys will win. And if it’s Cochran who’s gotten too impressed with his own self or Eddie who didn’t really do much of anything …either one will be a disappointment. But a disappointment that I won’t remember much longer past the end of the reunion show.

Which will focus on Malcolm.
